BROOME ANGLICAN CHURCH of the ANNUNCIATION

History

1970 Artist Impression of Broome Anglican Church of the Annunciation.

Bishop Riley of Perth dedicated Broome's Church of the Annunciation in July 1903. Back then the new church cost 600 pounds to build. For most of World War 1 the church had no parish minister. Archdeacon Simpson was based in Broome and served the surrounding region in the north west of the state from 1920 to 1946. As Broome declined after World War 2, no minister was appointed. In 1966 the church became attached to the Parish of Derby. For many years the successive ministers in Derby travelled to Broome to take services on two Sundays each month. In 1976 extensive renovations were made to the church which included replacing the exterior walls with colour bond.In 1986 the appointment of the Rev Canon Bernard Buckland meant that Broome once again had a resident Anglican minister.

1912 The Bishops Palace later became a boarding house.

In 1995 Archdeacon Raymond Molyneux became Rector upon Bishop Buckland's departure. In 1998 Rev David O'Mara arrived in Broome to assist Archdeacon Molyneux and in 2000 David O'Mara became local minister when Raymond retired. In 2004 David moved to Jakarta and Rev Stephen Gabbott arrived from Bankok. In September 2005 Stephen Gabbott responded to an invitation to return to Bangkok and Rev. Alan Mower came as locum preacher for three months. In February 2006 Rev. Tim Mildenhall arrived as Senior Rector and Rev. Lachlan Edwards as Assistant Rector.

The Rev. Stephen and Marion Gabbott served in Broome from December 2004 - September 2005.They have returned to Bangkok to work for CMS at Christ Church , where they previously served for six years.
